Lorien Health Services Tops List Of ‘High Performing’ Nursing Homes Ranked By U.S. News & World Report

Lorien Health Services, a family-owned and operated assisted living/nursing home company and industry innovator, is among the 19% of facilities nationwide recognized as a Best Nursing Home for 2024 by the U.S. News & World Report.

Six Lorien Health Services locations earned Best Nursing Home status by achieving the highest possible rating of “High Performing” for Short-Term Rehabilitation and/or Long-Term Care, including Columbia, Mt. Airy, Elkridge, Bel Air, Taneytown; and Bulle Rock, winning in both the Short and Long-Term Rehabilitation categories, according to the publication.

“Being recognized by U.S. News & World Report is a testament to Lorien’s team, which is focused on caring for our residents and patients as if they were family,” said Lou Grimmel, CEO for Lorien Health Services. “Our team embodies our “Care Forward” mantra, which can be seen every day through their dedication to our residents and communities. Since Lorien’s founding over 45 years ago, we’ve been guided by our founders’ pride of ownership and their principal value that ‘we are family taking care of families, friends, and neighbors.’”

To be recognized as one of the 2024 U.S. News Best Nursing Homes, a home must have been “High Performing” in short-term rehabilitation, long-term care or both. Out of the 15,009 nursing homes evaluated, 2,804 met the criteria. Of that group, 1,918 nursing homes were high performing in short-term rehabilitation, and 1,353 nursing homes were high performing in long-term care. Only 467 were high performing in both categories, which included Lorien’s Bulle Rock location.

The 2023/2024 ratings were determined by nurse staffing, patient outcomes and whether steps known to be effective in avoiding harm and improving health were built into nursing homes.

The U.S. News Best Nursing Homes Short-Term Rehabilitation, Long-Term Care and overall ratings offer individuals and families a starting point in their search for a nursing home, whether they need short-term rehabilitation services, long-term care or are interested in a nursing home’s overall care.

Since their inception in 2009, the U.S. News Best Nursing Home ratings have relied on data from Nursing Home Compare, a program run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the federal agency that sets and enforces standards for nursing homes.

In 2018, U.S. News added a Short-Term Rehabilitation rating, evaluating the care delivered to patients after a hospitalization for surgery, heart attack, stroke, injury or similar condition. In 2019, U.S. News added a Long-Term care rating, evaluating the care delivered to residents who are no longer able to live independently and need help with daily activities such as eating, getting in or out of bed or wheelchair, using stairs or getting dressed, as well as administering needed medical care.
